pouring out my helplessness and frustations

somebody please come and educate me on teaching primary school students.

today i am even snarkier than ever. i wanted to do a fun vocabulary lesson. so with the help of my trusty textbook, i read them the story 'The Big Bun',. the words should be simple enough for the students to understand contextually. it was an hour 1 period class and the students were responding well to the story. some has even read them beforehand but i asked them to keep silence until i finish telling the story.

i wanted them to be able to guess the meaning from the context. so when the regularly confused students were raising hell because they cannot understand, i asked them to be patient and try to guess the meaning.

unfortunately they switched off.

completely.

the thing is i explained to the class the meaning of the words contextually. everyone else, including the weak ones were listening. ada 2 3 ketul ni switched off and they were clueless of the story. i was so frustrated i yelled at them. i know my mother told me to be patient because they might really not know, and by me yelling might make them not want to ask me anymore and they will stay in the dark forever. but these kids, i am pretty sure they are doing it for attention. i have my reasons to feel so, and knowing that they are kids, it is not impossible.

please tell me i am not being too negative with the kids.

so yeah. today is the bad day with the kids. i snapped and snapped and snapped. especially with this one boy who really really was keen to test my patience. i even had to go to him, take the long ruler and demanded him to read or else i am going to go crazy with the spanking. he, fortunately, understood that i meant business.

and...today only half the class finished the task in the classroom and handed in their homework on time. what is the secret of making year 4 kids hand in their tasks by the end of the class?

i am so frowny. going to frown until i get my coffee fix

Hi Cikin, aten here. Well with kids they're really testing you, till you breakdown in front of them. But fret not, you're not heading that way. My advice is to pre-teach vocab before storytelling session.Just 2-3 words with pictures will do. Another thing is to make storytelling interactive. Get the students to move around,or make sounds of a giant (if u're thinking of Jack n the beanstalk, Fee Fi Fo Fum, or get the boys to act n say the dialogue of the wolf in Red Riding Hood). It takes time, don't worry! :) Goodluck!

thanks loadsss aten! will try it out soon.

i taught them vocabulary of food with pictures before, so i thought abt changing varying the method for a bit. turned out not everyone are able to guess words from contexts.

but pictures would definitely help. thanks so much!

well i'd say kuddos for your effort of doing storytelling in the class. I myself don't like story telling, sebab susah nk cntrol budak2 n keep them focus throughout the process. hehe

btw, aten's ideas are very2 useful. =)paste the pre-teach vocab on the wall so that they can refer to it during the storytelling.
i don't really encourage this, but if they don't really understand certain word or phrase even after u explain it in simple english, try direct translation, or giving example in malay.

other than that, u can add simple props and sounds related to the story.

or try being one of the character, i mean telling the story using the character's view. eg=

it's ok to alter the story =p

and maybe u can reread the story with the kids after u go through the meaning of the whole story if u still have the time. if not, maybe try refresh the story the next session to make sure they still remember and understand the storyline.

after the storytelling boleh try jigsaw reading, or ask them to draw part of the story. to be continued =p

-goood luckkkkkk. keep calm and drink coffee =D

Hi ,Salam
Its mamason,Aten's mum.Was a teacher and still now a teacher. Story telling technique..there's few :
Get pupils seated in front of you.Choose stories that has repetitive dialogues or story line.Involve children in the story.Change your voice accordingly.Be it.. a big ferocious lion or giant or a gentle mouse....
have cutouts of characters.
Story telling is indeed a sure way of making the children happy.
The Great Big Enormous Turnip is a nice story to begin with.

thanks capa. next week i want to try to preteach vocab, using the same story to a different class and see the results.

and instead of asking them to write alternate ending i will try to ask them to draw parts. thanks for the suggestion :DDDD

Aten's mom! Hello nice to meet you here and getting help from a pro! :D

thanks for the tip.. i'll tell you how it goes once i use the story!
